Spectating at the July 4th Foot Traffic Flat Marathon — Portland, OR

Cheering Jason on— Foot Traffic Flat Marathon

Ever since the Rum Run in May, I have been totally lazy. Jason on the other hand, spent the first part of the summer training for his first full marathon— The Foot Traffic Flat Marathon on July 4th on Sauvie Island in Portland.

It’s crazy to think it’s been almost a month now because it was such a big occasion. Jason is a fast runner and he sets lofty goals— this time it was attempting to qualify for Boston in his first full marathon ever— which meant a finish time under 3:05.

Unfortunately, the weather did not cooperate and we suffered a killer heatwave for the Portland area. In fact, temps soared to nearly 100 degrees later that day—miserable for us Willamette Valley natives.

Along with a whole bunch of Jason’s family, I took my bike to Sauvie Island— the better to cheer him on. It felt strange not to be running, but I have to admit I was glad. With the insane temperatures, I’ve nearly sworn off running completely this summer. I do not do well in heat.

Jason Running

Another great photo of Jason! (Copyright Gary Kentner)

I rode my bike to a corner where the half-marathon and full marathon runners were splitting and dedicated myself to ringing my cowbell and waving flags to cheer on all the half-marathon runners. I felt I was paying it forward, considering how much I love people who cheer for my slow self.

Jason was on an out-and-back part of the marathon course and by the time the slowest of the half-marathoners ran past, the fastest marathoners were coming around the corner and I got to cheer for Jason.

He looked spectacular in his Captain America Under Armour running shirt— one of the few fast fellows who dared to wear something themed to July 4th.

Jason ran a great pace up until mile 15. By mile 17, his new goal was to finish with a solid marathon time of under 4 hours. For a first marathon, that’s a pretty solid goal.

I rode my bike up a ways to cheer him on, but left around mile 17 to ride back to the finish, where tons of people were running in. Many were dressed with patriotic spirit in celebration of the holiday (including Jason, of course).

I walked down the course a ways, ready to cheer in Jason and when I saw him approach the finish line, I went ballistic. I’m sure others were wondering. Jason ran across the finish line for a time of 3:53:26, well under his revised goal!

Marathon finisher 4th of july

He was truly happy with his finish, which is faster than many marathoners will ever run (like me, if I ever make it 26.2). I finally found a distance that will wear Jason out.

Once he could breathe again, Jason swore he would never run another marathon again. In fact running at all… why do people do it?

We celebrated his accomplishment and the fourth of july with an epic BBQ with tons of great homecooked food, including pulled pork and BBQ pulled chicken, mac & cheese, bourbon baked beans, coleslaw, cornbread and more.

By 2 weeks later, Jason said he’d be interested in running another full marathon.

It was interesting watching a race, and I had fun riding my bike around the island and cheering. The waiting is a little hard, especially knowing I could be suffering through my own race (and finishing a Half-marathon only an hour or so faster than Jason’s first full).

My Perfect Running Sunglasses

IMG_3918-0

I’m rather picky about my sunglasses

After my favorite pair of running sunglasses snapped at the start line of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Vancouver Half Marathon, I had a hard time going about replacing them. I bought an emergency pair at last minute for the Star Wars Half Marathon, but really didn’t like them.

But now that it’s spring and I’m running on sunny days, I had to find a good pair.

Things I look for in Running Sunglasses

  1. Smaller lenses/fit: I have a small head. I can even wear some kid styles.
  2. Brown lenses: It’s often cloudy but bright in Oregon. I like the contrast of the brown lenses to counteract the diffused light.
  3. Polarized.
  4. Lightweight: Like a feather.. I don’t want to feel tired of wearing them by mile 10.
  5. Wraparound/ Sport style: Sport sunglasses should help in protecting your eyes from wind or dust.
  6. Doesn’t touch my eyelashes: If they are small and wraparound, getting them not to touch my eyelashes as well is sometimes a problem
  7. Reasonable price: This traditionally has meant less than $30, but after a couple months of looking, I’ve made an exception.

I finally found a pair on sale at REI, Suncloud’s “Wisp” sunglasses with brown lenses. The only thing that would make these better would be if they weren’t tortoise shell patterned frames. I’d prefer a plain color frame, but everything else is wonderful. The price was a little high for me (I adore cheap sunglasses),  but worth it.

I just hope they don’t break!

Feeling Green: Planning a St. Patrick’s Day Running Outfit

St Patrick's Day Running Outfit

I haven’t done much running since the Heartbreaker Half, but I am planning runs. The Luckython 5K is coming up soon and I’ll be running it with Katie. Since this is a St. Patrick’s Day themed run, we wanted to be wearing some green.

So over the weekend Katie and I sewed ourselves some green sparkle skirts. This is now the fourth one I’ve made.

We decided to make them pleated— after making a gathered sparkle skirt for pigs in space outfit, I’ve decided pleated is simpler and looks just as fun.

I also have some shamrock bows we can tie into our ponytails.

It may be a shorter race, but it should be a ton of fun!

I’m continuing to plan out my spring running plans and trying to decide on my next half marathon.

2015 RaceCenter Northwest Event Expo & Future Races

Packet pick-up for the Heart Breaker Half Marathon was held at Foot Traffic during the RaceCenter Event Expo and they had discounts on dozens of upcoming races. There were also great deals on shoes, although I sadly didn’t find a pair for me.

I was pleasantly surprised by how fun the expo was. It was quite a Valentine’s Day treat and we couldn’t help but sign up for a few races.

Luckython

luckython 2015 race

I’ve always wanted to a St. Patrick’s themed race, but the better-known Portland Shamrock Run has gotten too expensive and commercial for me. We had fun at the Freedomthon and the Turkeython so Uberthon’s Luckython seemed like a good choice.

Although there were 15K and 10K options, but after essentially running a half marathon a month, I think I’ll be taking a break from longer runs for a little longer. I’m signed up to run the 5K with friends.

Rum Run

rumrun

Mom and I were both tickled by this Tiki-themed race and it’s two days before her birthday. It’s held in the Tualatin Commons which is a really pretty place to run. Sounds like a blast, so we signed up for the Rum Run 10K distance.

Ladybug Run

Basic RGB

An inexpensive race with an adorable logo and t-shirt, the Ladybug Run not only supports a cause, but is held in Cook Park (we’ve run in Cook Park two years in a row now for the Twilight Run and love the course). Plus, a 5K is a good distance during busy summers.

Other News

The biggest news of the expo was actually Jason’s news. Although I briefly debated signing up for the Portland Marathon, Jason took the plunge and signed up for the Foot Traffic Flat Marathon. Although it will be his first full marathon, he plans to train for a Boston qualifying time (his fastest half marathon time is 1:32:06).

Wish my husband good luck!

Post-Rebel Challenge Medal Dilemma

I ran the Star Wars 10K and the Star Wars Half Marathon this past weekend to complete runDisney Inaugural Rebel Challenge. I promise, I will write more about the amazing experience of running through the Disneyland Resort, but here’s a more pressing concern:

Where should I put my medals on our medal wall? And which medals get taken off?

Jason and I share the medal wall.

Jason and I share the medal wall (left). I earned my Rebel Challenge Medals (right) this weekend. Which means some medals have got to go. On the medal wall, Top: Rock ‘n’ Roll Portland (Jason), Tinker Bell Half Marathon (Kallen), Holiday Half Marathon (Kallen), Rock ‘n’ Roll Vancouver (Kallen & Jason). Middle: Triple Crown Rock ‘n’ Roll Heavy Medal (Jason),  Pacific Peaks Rock ‘n’ Roll Medal (Jason), Cascadia Rock ‘n’ Roll Medal (Jason). Bottom:  Rock Encore Rock ‘n’ Roll Heavy Medal (Jason), Rock ‘n’ Roll Seattle (Jason).

When we opted for hooks instead of a medal rack, Jason and I said that not every one of our medals would be displayed at the same time. This way it never looks cluttered and switching them out keeps it from getting old.

Difficult choices….

I’m still recovering from the races, the early mornings and the traveling, but the medals sure are fun to look at.

Star Wars Half Marathon Weekend Packet Pick-up

Today was the first official day of the Inaugural Star Wars Half Marathon Weekend and the first day of the expo.

RunDisney Expo sign
One of the Pigs in Space is running the 5K tomorrow and we stopped by the expo to pick up our packets.

Although we didn’t spend too much time at the expo (we plan on spending all day Saturday there), we did stop by the official merchandise area too.

Shirts & merchandise from Star Wars Half RunDisney Expo

Aside from the three official race shirts, I splurged on a Rebel Challenge jacket… now I have to finish the race. Also pictured are race pins and a green Star Wars Half shirt & vinylmation that Jason picked up.

May the course be with you!

Tomorrow is the 5k and I’m excited to be spectating and cheering everyone on!

Disney Running Songs for a RunDisney Playlist

The Star Wars Half Marathon weekend begins today with the start of the expo. I’ll be cheering at the Star Wars 5K tomorrow and I’m getting ready for my two races.

Being race ready means I have a wicked playlist. For the Star Wars Half, I’ve added a few tracks, including Cantina Band, and Throne Room/End Titles.

But there are some Disney songs that often end up on my running playlists

Favorite New Song | Immortals (Fall Out Boy)

Although Big Hero 6 has only been out since November, this is well on its way to being a staple of my running playlists.

Guilty Pleasure | Let it Go (Idina Menzel)

This has been on my running playlists for a year now, starting with the playlist I created for the Tinker Bell Half Marathon.

Old Favorite | I’ll Make a Man out of You (Donny Osmond)

I haven’t seen a Disney running playlist yet that doesn’t include this song. If you need pre-gym inspiration, you should watch the video clip too.

An Exhausting 30-minute Run in one Song | Soundsational Parade

If I really want a fast-paced run (for me), I can always play the entire soundtrack from Disneyland’s Soundsational Parade. That beat never lets up!

More Disney Running Songs

Do you use Spotify? Although I rarely run listening only  to Disney music, I’ve put a selection of my standard upbeat Disney favorites on my Disney Running Playlist.

Costume reveal for the Inaugural RunDisney Star Wars Half Marathon

Here it is, a running costume I am very excited about! PIGS IN SPACE!

I'm ready to run as part of the Swinetrek Crew!

I’m ready to run as part of the Swinetrek Crew!

Yes, this is totally in a different direction than my droid 10K costume. Why Pigs in Space? So many good reasons. Dressing as a muppet forces you to refuse to take your race too seriously. How can you not smile?

There’s also no pressure. Pigs are allowed to be slow. Or tired. Or goofy. Actually. They’re just plain fun!

There are so many great costume elements to the Pigs in Space uniforms and they look great when you have a group.

Yes, there is a group of us dressed as Pigs in Space muppets.

I’m a big fan of the original Muppet Show and I love the Sci-fi parody sketch Pigs in Space.

But if you really need a solid Star Wars connection to justify the amazingly fun costumes, the Stars of Star Wars— Luke Skywalker, C-3PO, R2-D2 and Chewbacca— were guest stars on an episode of the Muppet Show.

And of course, they had to show up on the Swinetrek on Pigs in Space. A highlight has got to be tap dancing C-3PO (yay Anthony Daniels).

“When you wish upon a Star” performed by the Muppets, Stars of Star Wars and Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker’s more musical cousin)

You really get the sense that Mark Hamill (“cousin” of Luke) is just having fun on the show.

Star Wars and the Muppets are now both owned by Disney, but back when this episode was filmed, Empire Strikes Back hadn’t even come out.

This is amazing because the episode ends with a rousing rendition of “When You Wish Upon a Star” complete with castle and fireworks.

If you like Muppets, you should really watch the entire episode. On a side note, Miss Piggy is performed by Frank Oz, the puppeteer and voice behind Yoda.

Shirt | just a lavender (or grey) running shirt. After all, we want to make sure we are comfortable during the half marathon.

The female Pigs in Space costume (Miss Piggy’s) varies from lavender to pink during the course of the show. Typical of Piggy to constantly change her wardrobe.

Pigs in Space Logos in progress

Pigs in Space Logos in progress

Logo | Gotta love the logo. We made them out of felt, which was fairly simple.

When we set out to find the logo so we could create our own, we ended up finding a template and tutorial on Jade Flower’s blog. I love the internet… if it’s geeky, you can find it. The stars we bought as iron-on patches, but we sewed them on instead.

Pigs in Space First Mate Piggy and Captain Link Hogthrob: The female Swinetrek uniform varies from the male Swinetrek uniform.

Skirt/shorts |  For us women, we just sewed our sparkle skirts using the same tutorial from Beauty Still Remains that I used for my Mousketeer skirt except with gathered ruffles instead of pleats. For the guys, we found silvery colored shorts (amazingly) and then sewed silvery sparkle stripes on the side.

Ears | To attatch the ears, I opted for a 60’s style wide headband, common to some Miss Piggy has sported in the past. The ears were made out of felt, and then attached to the headband, a metallic silver stretchy fabric.

Headbands were not an option for the guys, whose ears are attached to their running caps. With silver reflective stripes, they look great!

Guys modeling their Pigs in Space running costumes. Remember what I said about being dressed as a muppet and not being able to take things seriously?

The guys modeling their Pigs in Space running costumes.

Collar and Epaulettes | We almost skipped the ridiculous silver epaulettes, but they’re kind of classic.

The epaulettes are basically stuffed round tubes of fabric and the collar is a straight stuffed tube. We opted for a lightweight metallic fabric — lighter than the stretch we used for the headband — so we only attached the collar to the front of the shirt. If you attach it to the back, you can’t get it over your head.

Accessories | No one wanted to run in gloves, but we designed these silver gauntlets that capture the retro flare of the originals. They are made of a very stiff, thick fabric, almost like faux leather. Undo the velcro and they can lay flat so if anyone gets annoyed while running, they can easily be taken off and tucked into a running belt.

Only Dad is sporting the silver cape worn by Pigs in Space Captain Link Hogthrob. He’s doing a shorter distance and it won’t likely get cumbersome for him. It looks glorious, so I think Jason is a little jealous (as we know from his superman running costume, he’s fond of capes).

I’m leaving today for the Star Wars Half Marathon weekend and I’m really looking forward to the Rebel Challenge. Can’t wait! And I’m totally ready to rock this challenge.

Pigs in Space will bring me power!

You may say that I'm

You may say that I’m “Hamming” it up in this photo (I couldn’t help it).

Getting Closer: A Collection of Star Wars Half Tweets

In the days before a major race, I tend to haunt the hashtags on Twitter…. You can actually feel the excitement from the digital community growing.

Doesn’t look like I’ll finish my R2 model before I leave however.

I’ll actually be guest posting about my Rebel Challenge experience on Sarah’s amazing blog, Running at Disney, so look for that after the race!

Jason is in A corral.. but maybe when I take my phone out to snap photos with characters, I can virtually know where he is. Runner tracking could be fun!

Notice the RunDisney shoes? This is only the second time I’ve put the ribbon laces on the Cinderella shoes (the first was the Freedomthon). I’ve been trying to keep them nice!

Tomorrow I’ll post about my costume for the Star Wars Half Marathon (check out my 10K costume). I’ll be in California soon!
